On November 3rd, SCIT students won one silver and two bronzes in 2024 “FLTRP-ETIC Cup” “Understanding Contemporary China” Sichuan Foreign Language Contest for College Students, which was organized by Sichuan Provincial Department of Education.

After two weeks of competition, the contest finally came to an end at Chengdu Normal University. SCIT candidates had experienced a six-month selection and training period before they participated in the following four competitions: “English Speaking Contest”, “Comprehensive English Competence Contest”, “English Translation Contest” and “Comprehensive Japanese Competence Contest”, and these students finally won one silver and two bronzes. A total of 102 contestants, including undergraduate and graduate students, participated in the English Speaking Contest. They came from 49 institutions in Sichuan Province, such as Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu University of Technology, etc. The speaking contest was divided into two rounds. The first round required each contestant to make a prepared speech with the given topic “The Chinese Dragon is Good” and Xia Ting, a primary education major beginning her undergraduate studies at SCIT in 2023, offered a fluent speech while sticking to the topic at the same time, which made her advance to the second round with a high score of 88.35. In the second round, “impromptu speech contest”, Xia Ting impressed the audience and the judges with her passionate speech as well as her wise and humorous answers to the question. In the end, she won a silver of this contest with a score of 86.68, ranking 19th. This result serves as a breakthrough in this event for our institute.

Cao Lijuan, a primary education major beginning her undergraduate studies at SCIT in 2022, won a bronze in the English Translation Contest after competing with about 90 contestants from more than 40 institutions, which was the best result the SCIT students had ever received in this contest. In addition, with the patient guidance of the teachers from the International College, Ren Qingyan, another primary education major beginning the undergraduate studies at SCIT in 2022, won a bronze in the Japanese competition which attracted more than 70 participants from over 30 institutions in Sichuan province. It is the first time that SCIT has sent students to participate in the multilingual discipline competitions at the provincial level, and the good results SCIT students have gained proves the great potential of the multilingual development path in the foreign language teaching reform of our institute.

The good results of this contest not only reflect the strong foreign language competence of SCIT students, but also demonstrate the great achievements of our institute’s internationalization construction and foreign language teaching reform. In the future, SCIT will continue to embrace the concept of “promoting teaching and learning through competitions”, to integrate discipline competitions into the whole process of talents cultivation, and to be dedicated to the cultivation of well-rounded students in the new era, aiming at contributing to the construction of a leading country in education.
